Lithium

Lithium and its salts are used in glass and ceramic industries. Lithium is alloyed with aluminium. Lithium compounds are used in batteries and television tubes. Lithium is also used in nuclear reactors. Lithium does not occur in free state. It occurs as silicate and phosphate in granite and pegmatite rocks. The major producers of lithium are Chile USA, Russia, and China. Lithium is added from 1 to 2.5 % with aluminium to form a light and strong alloy. This alloy is used in structural parts, wings and body parts of aircraft. Some amount of magnesium or copper helps in providing ductility to the new alloy.
